Birth Records Information

Birth records are not public records and can only be obtained by the individual or the parents of the individual either in person or through the mail.

In Person: Submit a driver's license or three pieces of I.D. including at least one picture I.D.

By Mail: Complete a Vital Records Request Form including father's name, mother's maiden name, and copy of driver's license or Photo ID and mail to:

$10.00 for the first certified copy and $5.00 for each additional certified copy of the same record.

Death Certificate Information

Necessary information to obtain a death certificate is as follows:


  • Name and Date of Death.
  • Mother's and Father's name is necessary if date of death is unknown.

Assumed Names Information

Must apply in person at the County Clerk's Office with all signatories present to be sign.

Marriage License Information

To obtain a marriage license:


Applicants must fill out an Affidavit for License to Marry.  Both applicants must have picture identification. Applicants 16 years of age must appear with a parent or guardian and present his/her birth certificate, as well as picture identification for the parent or guardian. Michigan residents must apply in the county of residence and then can be married in any county in the state. Non-residents must apply in the county the marriage will take place.

Please note that there is a three day waiting period after filling out an application before the license may be obtained. The Marriage license is valid for 30 days - marriage must be performed within that 30 days.

Notary Public Information

Qualifications:

You must be 18 years of age or older, a Michigan resident, and reside in Alger County.


Procedure:

An Application for Michigan Notary Public Commission must be completed and returned to the Clerk's Office with a $10,000.00 (ten thousand dollars) surety bond and payment of a $10.00 (ten dollars) processing fee payable to the Alger  County Clerk. The applicant must then mail the application and a check or money order for $10.00 (ten dollars) to the State of Michigan. The Notary Certificate is mailed directly to the applicant.


Voter Registration Information

To Register to vote you must be:

  • a U.S. citizen
  • at least 18 years of age by election day
  • A resident of Michigan and the city or township where you are applying to register to vote
You can register to vote for federal, state, and local elections by mail: at your county, city or township clerk's office, or by visiting a Secretary of State branch office.
